The Bauhaus was not only innovative in architecture and design but also in education. Can the methods and principles of the historical university be transferred to primary school work today? Is it possible to teach mathematics through art?
Line, flat surface, colour and space: starting out from the design principles of Bauhaus teaching– adopting an interdisciplinary approach together with class teacher Hanne Schönbier and art teacher and Bauhaus representative Hanne Baum–we conceived various teaching units as part of the school programme. Subsequently, we tested them with the pupils of class 5.2 in open teaching formats.
We recorded the most successful modules on thematic index cards. These are now the main component of our Bauhaus Curriculum. At the end of the project it will be available to all teachers as didactic material.

Headline
In June 2018, we presented our interim results during the school's anniversary celebration. In its final version, the Bauhaus Curriculum will also contain instructions comprising illustrations, pictures, hands-on objects, material samples and examples of results for the pupils, so that they can complete some assignments independently.
Even in the first phase, the historical Bauhaus proved an excellent and diverse source of inspiration for the conception of teaching materials at primary level. Educational content can be communicated effectively and vividly through art, design and architecture. Intuitive learning, creativity and numerous skills–not least language skills–are encouraged.
